The Imo State Government has officially banned graduation ceremonies for kindergarten and nursery pupils across the state.
The announcement was made by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Johncliff Nwadike, during a press briefing in Owerri. According to the commissioner, the ban is part of ongoing reforms to refocus the education system on academic development rather than unnecessary celebrations.
Prof. Nwadike said the practice of organising elaborate graduation events for children at the early childhood education level had become excessive and counterproductive, placing unnecessary financial pressure on parents.
“There is no academic justification for organising graduation ceremonies at the kindergarten level. We must return our focus to the core purpose of early education, which is learning and foundational development—not parties and fashion shows,” he stated.
He also warned that any school found flouting the directive would face sanctions from the Ministry of Education.
The commissioner further encouraged schools to channel their resources into improving teaching quality, classroom infrastructure, and teacher training, rather than hosting events that contribute little to students’ academic growth.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions among parents and educators, with some welcoming the move as a step toward reducing costs, while others believe graduation ceremonies motivate children and celebrate early milestones.
